Scams and Phishing: the following information will take you to some of the links we spoke about during this session. If in doubt don't open an email or a link that you are unsure about.
BE WARNED!!!
a quick note - a NEW scam - A person from “TELSTRA” rings, gives a name and an AUSID number (whatever that is) and then notifies you that they have detected an overseas “person” connecting to your IP address (i.e. your computer) and ask that you open TERMINAL and type in “netstat” - this in itself is quite harmless but after that they will (I assume) ooh and ahhh as you read them what it brings up and then they will ask you to type in numbers etc to remotely allow them access - result= some virus which they will then offer to remove for a price.
I suggested to the operator that I was unsure if this was “fair dinkum” - she was very reassuring of course but rather upset when I suggested that she would be if she was a scammer too wouldn’t she? I then asked for a phone number and her name etc so I could call Telstra - surprise, surprise… she hung up!
I have checked with Telstra and yes, it is a scam.
